Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS) remains a challenging and enigmatic chronic orofacial pain condition. Characterized by a persistent burning sensation in the oral mucosa, without identifiable clinical or laboratory findings, Despite increasing interest over the past decades, its pathophysiology is still poorly understood, with evidence pointing to complex interactions between peripheral and central nervous system dysfunction, hormonal changes, and psychosocial factors.

Current approaches to diagnosis and management are hampered by the lack of objective biomarkers and standardized clinical criteria. Recent advances in neuroimaging, histological analysis and salivary diagnostics offer promising avenues, but further research is essential to translate these findings into effective clinical tools.

This special issue is dedicated to BMS, with the aim of providing an updated, multidisciplinary perspective on its etiology, diagnosis, and management. We welcome original research articles, systematic reviews, clinical trials, and high-quality narrative reviews exploring all aspects of BMS, including but not limited to: peripheral and central mechanisms, histopathological changes, novel diagnostic criteria, and emerging therapeutic strategies. We invite researchers, clinicians, and experts in oral medicine, pain science, neurology, and related fields to contribute to this timely issue. By fostering collaboration and scientific dialogue, we hope to advance the understanding and care of patients suffering from this debilitating condition.

Together, let us move forward in unraveling the complexities of Burning Mouth Syndrome.

Regards,
