Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

This Special Issue focuses on the interdisciplinary assessment and management of temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), emphasizing the integration of clinical evaluation, imaging, and musculoskeletal ultrasound to improve diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic precision. TMDs represent a complex group of conditions that frequently require coordinated input from dentistry, physiotherapy, radiology, and pain medicine.

Particular attention will be given to the clinical application and reliability of musculoskeletal ultrasound in identifying myofascial and intra-articular pathologies, as well as its expanding role in ultrasound-guided interventions such as infiltrations, dry needling, and emerging regenerative therapies. The Special Issue will highlight ultrasound not only as a diagnostic adjunct, but also as a tool that enhances precision and safety in minimally invasive procedures.

By bridging the gap between diagnostic assessment and evidence-based treatment, this collection seeks to demonstrate how multidisciplinary collaboration improves patient outcomes and advances contemporary, patient-centered models of TMD care. We welcome submissions of original research, clinical trials, and high-quality reviews that align with the mission of the Journal of Oral & Facial Pain and Headache to promote translational, patient-centered approaches inorofacial pain and temporomandibular disorders management.

Regards,

Eleuterio A. Sánchez-Romero, André Mariz de Almeida, Rob Sillevis
