Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The Journal of Oral & Facial Pain and Headache special issue is designed as a platform for cutting-edge research and comprehensive reviews on the complex and evolving interface between headache disorders and orofacial pain. This issue aims to illuminate the overlapping biological mechanisms, clinical presentations, and therapeutic strategies that characterize these two interrelated yet distinct conditions.

Headaches and orofacial pain represent significant health burdens worldwide, often coexisting and presenting diagnostic challenges that span the fields of neurology and dentistry. Traditional views have treated these conditions as separate entities. However, emerging evidence suggests a shared pathophysiology involving neurovascular, musculoskeletal, and psychosocial factors. In this issue, we seek perspectives that contribute insights from neuroscience, pain medicine, dental research, and clinical practice. This may be achieved through both original research and review articles. By comparing and contrasting the phenotypes of migraine, tension-type headache, and temporomandibular disorders, contributors will provide a robust framework for clinicians managing overlapping or concurrent symptoms. One of the areas of interest of this issue is emerging trends, including the role of psychosocial stressors, genetic predisposition, and lifestyle factors that modulate both headache and orofacial pain.

The editors have curated this issue to foster dialogue, promote collaboration, and inspire future research endeavors. We encourage researchers, clinicians, and academicians to contribute their insights and findings, with the ultimate goal of enhancing diagnostic precision and improving patient care across both domains.

Regards,

Dr. Marcin Straburzynski
